Performing hands on management, literally, I planned, budgeted and installed American artist Sol LeWitt’s large scale Wall Drawings for more than 10 years. Of the many unique experiences this work has given me, I will point out team management, mentoring, team motivation, team focus - in chaotic, disruptive environments such as doing meticulous precision work in a construction site - and client relations - I was Lewitt’s face to directors, curators, collectors and donors when I was heading these projects on site.
My tenure at Lewitt’s studio culminated with the exhibition Sol LeWitt: A Wall Drawing Retrospective, the largest show of Lewitt’s Wall Drawings ever installed. It comprises 105 of LeWitt’s largescale wall drawings, spanning the artist’s career from 1969 to 2007. These occupy nearly an acre of specially built interior walls in a 27,000-square-foot structure, which was fully restored for the exhibition by Bruner/Cott & Associates architects.
The exhibition is scheduled to stay open for 25 years.
I joined the project as a planner and project manager in September 2007, and I continued as project manager and chief installer through to the completion of the project in September 2008, overseeing budgeting, supplies, accommodation, crew hirings, as wel as on-site management and execution of the drawings.
Below here is a selection of projects from my ten years installing these beautiful artworks.
